Minecraft UI Challenge
Minecraft UI Challenge
The Minecraft Inventory challenge is one of the most dynamic challenges during DigiPen's User Interface experience. My take, however, puts a whole new spin on the question: "How can we optimize the inventory system in Minecraft, one of the most pronounced triple A games in the last decade?"

I really got inspired by games like Final Fantasy 14 for this unique take on the hotbars tied to the inventory system. I also wanted to include a page mechanic to allow the player to have more storage space based on the amount of backpack space they have.

DAY-Z also has a interesting inventory system similar to FFXIV.... I think I'm onto something here!
Final Fantasy 14 has a very in-depth and unique Inventory system.

As well as a hot bar system! Hmm... I wonder if I can use this for later!
So... where did I start?
Research and findings beforehand.
When asked about the minecraft inventory....
-
80% of participants are unhappy with the current status due to the feeling of “crowdedness” / “lack of area to expand where items go for organization purposes”.
-
20% of participants are neutral towards the current state of vanilla, but mod their game to have different ways to “fix” their inventory.
When asked about concepts of ways to fix this...
-
60% of participants would love an organization system similar to the creative menu currently in game but for survival.
-
30% would prefer some kind of scrollable system to ‘flip’ the inventory like a book.
-
10% did not want to change it, as it would be too odd due to the lack of submenus throughout all of minecraft.
When asked about item stack limits currently...
-
60% do not mind item stack limiting at 64 (prefers multiple stacks of the same block)
-
40% would prefer if the stack of 64 was changed (to larger) but still divisible by 8 in some way (100, 128)
